DentistHygiene.co.uk is brought to you by the same team that developed allergymatters.com the leading allergy portal that is often considered the Which? of allergies.
There are hundreds of harmful micro-organisms that are passed through blood or saliva, both of which are present in dentistry. The use of headpieces, water and ultrasonic instruments, blood and saliva are transmitted easily. Most dental procedures will involve contact of the dentists and dental nurse with patient blood and saliva. As a result of this, the cleanliness and hygiene quality in a dental practice, has to be maintained to certain standards as directed by the NHS.
Proper infection control ensures patient, doctor and staff safety. The infections relevant to dental practices include the following:
FUNGI
Candida albicans –involved in oral thrush and denture stomatitis
VIRUSES
Hepaitis A, B, C -blood borne infection that lead to liver diseases.
Herpes Simplex type 1- involved in cold sores
Human Immunodeficiency Virus- blood /saliva borne infection can lead to AIDS
1. Streptococcus mutans-involved in dental carries found on surfaces
2. Staphylococci- causes gingival and skin boils found on surfaces
3. Porphyromonas gingivalis- causes periodontal disease found on surfaces
4. Mycobacterium Tuberculosis- airborne infection
5. Legionella pneumophilia- airborne droplet infection found in air vents
PROTOZOAL
Amoebiasis, Cryptosporidiosis, Cylocsporiasis, Giardiasis- water borne gastrointestinal infections
PARASITIC INFECTIONS
Schistosoiasis, Ascariasis, Entrobiais – also water borne skin and gastrointestinal infections.
PRIONS
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease – water bound air particle causing brain disease.
The people that are prone to infection will be Dentist, Staff and Patients. Patients or relatives of patients waiting in the reception are also prone to catch the infection if the air or the surfaces are not clean. Air vents are major source of infection that can transmit infections any where in the Dental clinics. Surfaces also contribute to spread of infection. So, in general people once in the Dental Surgery are at risk of contamination if the surgery does not meet standards of hygiene.
Dental practices are all about how well the practices market their services. There are more than 10,000 Dental practices across the UK. Competition is fierce and patients are aware of hygiene. Steam Sanitizers and Air Purifiers are used in health care settings and they ensure that cross infection is reduced to minimal levels.
Water purifiers , hand sanitizers, sharp object containers, ultra-violet and gamma rays Equipment Sterilisers, protective gloves, caps, glasses, gowns, special chemical detergents and surface wipes, ventilation systems.
Air: Ventilation systems can become a source for infection. If the air is not purified or filtered, the same dirty air is circulated back into the environment.
(Click here to read more about the out breaks from ventilation systems)
Surface: Surface wipes and chemical detergents leave residues behind. These residues can cause skin allergies and some have odours that cannot be tolerated by patients.
Air Filters or Air Purifiers have special filters (HEPA) in them that have the ability to filter 0.3µm size particles with an efficiency of 99.7%. These particles can be Bacterial, Viral, Fungal, Pollen, Prions as well as dust. HEPA filters do not generate ozone or harmful gases in the air, making them eco friendly as well.
IQAir Dental Series Air purifiers
IQ Air's Swiss made range of air cleaners achieve what is known as Hyper HEPA performance, which means that the whole machine has been classified as HEPA standard, not just the filter. These filters are designed to remove 99.7% of all airborne pollutants with an efficiency of 0.3 µm. IQAir has the advantage of intelligent individual filter change sensors, which enables you to change each filter individually as it becomes used.
The Dental Series Air Purifiers are used for the following applications:
- Microbial Control
- Bacteria and Viruses
- Fungal/Mould spores
- Volatile Organic Compounds, coming from products like petroleum, glue, paints, shoe polish, carpeting, cupboards, furniture, cleaning agents, solvents, and pesticides
- Oral Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VSC) that cause malodours.
- Drilled aerosol control
- Dispersed tissue and fluids
- Dispersed viruses and bacteria
- Mercury control
- Mercury vapours
- Disinfectant control
- Formaldehyde
- Alcohol
- General particle control
- Powder particles
- Polishing particles
- Combustion particles
- Dust Mite Allergens
- Pollen
- Pet Allergy
- Tobacco smoke

Steam has long been used to disinfect infections from instruments and surfaces. Now steam sanitizers are used in healthcare settings to ensure that high level of disinfection and saves time as well. MRSA, E.Coli, Staphylococcus strains, Influenza E type, T.B, HIV, HBV, HCV and many more have been shown to be destroyed on high temperatures. Steam produced at temperatures of 120 -180 Degrees ensures that microbial organisms are destroyed. Steam with a disinfectant allows longer time for the surface to remain microbial free.

Polti SaniSystem
Polti is an Italian company established as one of the best in providing steam cleaning products for more than 35 years. In 2006, with the collaboration of Pavia University Faculty of Medicine, Polti established the Polti Medical Division with the launch of their two steam sanitizers, the Sani System Standard and the Sani System Check. These two steam sanitizers were designed to reduce contamination caused by cross infections especially in Hospital and Dental settings.
What is proof, certifications of these units?
The following clinical studies prove the effectiveness of Sani System in reducing biological contamination of environments. They were carried out at major universities, hospitals and microbiological research centres in Italy and abroad.
- Sanitising of hospitals and comparison with conventional disinfection methods at the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Unit and at the Microbiology Unit, San Carlo Borromeo Hospital, Milan , Italy
- Evaluation of the reduction of the microbial load in a microbiology laboratory (Istituto Cantonale di Microbiologia, Bellinzona , Switzerland)
- Evaluation of activity on MRSA (Istituto Cantonale di Microbiologia, Bellinzona , Switzerland)
- Efficiency of Polti Sani System in reducing microbial load on inanimate surfaces (Environment and Biotechnology Centre, Faculty of Life and Social Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology , Australia)
- Evaluation of the virucidal effectiveness (H1N1) of the Polti Sani System (Biolab Laboratory Biolab, Vimodrone ( province of Milan ), Italy)
- Testing the effectiveness of Polti Sani System for eliminating infestations due to Cimex lectularius Pest2000 & Pest3000 (Pest Control Management Services, March 2010, Milan , Italy)
